We’ve just wrapped up the second part of a wonderful restoration workshop organized by a volunteer of the Attention, Garbage Truck is Coming! Foundation. The meetup was a direct continuation of last year’s “Rzecz w Tym” project, when time constraints meant not all the work could be finished.

Craft in Practice: A Second Life for Furniture
The workshop took place at Atelier WIMAR, a space run by the Łazęga Poznańska association. The event drew a group of people passionate about vintage design and the zero-waste idea. Under the guidance of Tomasz Makowiak, a longtime member of the Garbage Truck community and an experienced self-taught restorer who has spent a decade giving furniture another chance, participants took on the challenge of finishing work on abandoned chairs.
During the several hours of hands-on sessions, participants:
- Cleaned and repaired wooden chair frames.
- Learned basic upholstery techniques, picking up how to reupholster seats without a sewing machine.
- Discovered that restoring furniture’s function and looks doesn’t require expensive or specialized tools.
Caring for Our Surroundings and a Culture of Reuse
The main goal of the initiative was to strengthen ecological attitudes and promote self-reliance and agency in caring for one’s immediate surroundings. The workshops showed that restoring furniture can be accessible, cheap, and simple, and that giving objects a second life using basic tools and your own creativity brings enormous satisfaction.
